Why This Architect Designed His Shophouse Inspired Home | Modern Tropical Design | Architecture

Welcome to DESIGN SEED!

What if the inspiration for a modern family home could be found in the traditional shophouses we grew up with?

In this episode, we visit a home designed by architect Jerry Tan of YHDA, who reinterprets the familiar qualities of traditional shophouse living into a contemporary tropical residence. From its clean, minimalist facade to the open spaces hidden within, the house reveals a different approach to living — one shaped by natural ventilation, daylight, and a closer connection to nature.

Step inside to discover a sculptural spiral staircase beside a koi pond, internal courtyards that draw fresh air through the home, and open-air corridors that blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living. Even the smaller details, from perforated walls to carefully positioned openings, reflect a thoughtful response to Malaysia's tropical climate.

Rather than maximising every room, this home prioritises the spaces that bring people together, creating a balance between privacy, functionality, and family life.
